Show Transcript:
Hi. Welcome back to the Rainbo Podcast. I am your host, Tonya. And today we are going deep into a system that every single one of us is born with, but very few of us are taught how to truly understand it. Today is a transmission of the body's sacred energy network. And my aim is to kind of blend ancient wisdom with modern science. For us, this is one of my favorite systems of the body. We are talking about the nervous system. And the nervous system is so much more than physiological wiring. It is the original interface between your consciousness and your biology and really between your spirit and biology and between energy and matter. You as energy and you as the physical body. And I'll talk a bit about why and how that is. But essentially, the nervous system is your bridge. It is a tree of life and it is an antenna to the infinite. And most of us are taught about the nervous system in fragments. We think of the brain and the spine and fight or flight, all of these kind of disparate, separate themes. But the truth is, is that it is far more mystical and more powerful and way more essential than any of us have ever been told. So today we're going to explore the nervous system as the ancients did, and also as modern science is beginning to discover, remember, acknowledge. So most people are living at the mercy of their nervous system. And I want to start here because most of us are not living with our nervous system. We're really living at the mercy of it. We wake up, people are waking up with their hearts racing. And I say this because I've been there before, so I know this exact physiological response. When there's anxiousness in life. You wake up and your heart is immediately racing, or you walk into a room and you feel tension in your gut, or you can't sleep, or you're constantly kind of scanning your environment to see if you know you're safe. And that can happen unconsciously as well. And you try to think your way out of this. However, the problem is not mental. It is neurological. And that's because the nervous system has been shaped by our experiences and especially our early childhood ones. And so in science, many of us have heard of the polyvagal theory. So I want to introduce this because I really value the context and its amazing discoveries that have been developed by Dr. Stephen Porges. This doctor essentially has discovered that our automatic nervous system, what we think of as automatic responses, usually follow, or typically actually follow, this hierarchy of three states. And the first state is ventral vagal, which is kind of safe or social. And this is when we feel Calm and connected and regulated. The second state is fight or flight. Many of us have heard of this. This is the stress response. This is where our heart is racing, our pupils dilate, our cortisol rises. We get ready to have a responsive action to run or to protect ourselves. And then we have the third state, which is dorsal vagal. And this is freeze and shutdown. This is where the whole body collapses. There's numbness and there's disassociation. And each of these states is trying to protect us. And when we don't have the regulation tools, we can get stuck in these survival loops. And those survival loops are chronic anxiety, digestive system issues, because the vagus nerve is directly connected, of course, with the brain and then into the gut. Inflammation is a survival loop. Depression or emotional numbness also can be survival loops. And so every state, if we think about the nervous system ultimately trying to protect us, these loops, these survival loops, are just based on learned behaviors and order to protect you. And so ancient healing systems knew these aspects of the nervous system. However, of course, they didn't have MRIs, but what they did have were maps of energy and of breath and of emotion and of our willpower. So let's get anatomical for a moment. Your central nervous system is made up of the brain and the spinal cord. And this is the master control center. So every thought, every feeling, every movement originates here. And maybe there's even some dispute to that, right? Like, is every thought. We have our own thought? Are we picking up on what's in the ethers? But by and large, in the physical realm, the brain and the spinal cord and the whole nervous system are really the control centers of the body. Think about it kind of in those simple terms. For now, then, we have the peripheral nervous system, which branches outward like the roots and limbs of a tree. So the peripheral nervous system reaches into every organ, every muscle, every gland, every skin cell. And then we have the autonomic nervous system, which governs our heartbeat, our breathing, our digestion, our hormones, and our immune response. This system is always working behind the scenes, of course, and we can learn to engage with this consciously. We can change our breathing patterns. We can do various things to start to have mastery over the autonomic nervous system as well. So those are the three systems that we can think about when we're talking about the nervous system. If we go even deeper, this is something, I think it was, like, circulating on the Internet maybe a couple years ago. But when I first saw this video, I actually broke down in tears, and I want to talk about embryology and kind of this sacred architecture of the body, which, of course, is the nervous system. So if we go deeper, to the moment that life begins, to the moment where a sperm fertilizes an egg, something exceptional occurs. And scientists have observed what they call a zinc spark, but it is quite literally a burst of light that occurs at the moment of conception. And it's a measurable flash of light. It is the release of zinc ions into the egg as it's activated. And there's a bioelectric signal that marks the beginning of cellular division and, of course, the beginning of light, of life, rather, but also of light. But the moment that life begins, there is light. And this means that in order for a spirit to enter into biology, into the manifest 3D reality, it comes through with light. And that means that we are born into life through light. And when I really think about that, it's so beautifully profound that we talk about the love and the light and all of these aspects of how we actually make an entrance, how a spirit moves from. From the subtle realm of the spirit world into biology. It is through light. And from there, this beautiful blueprint unfolds. And within days of the sperm fertilizing the egg, there is the primitive streak, and that's the formation of this tiny line that becomes the blueprint for the spinal cord and the brain. And this is the first organizing structure of the body. And then from there, everything else, your organs, your limbs, your tissues, they all form around this central channel of your nervous system. So your nervous system is literally the architecture of your life, of your whole being. And it is the original interface with life that we ever had. And in esoteric traditions, this central channel is known as the sushumna nadi in yogic texts, or as the pillar of light in early Christian mysticism, or as the Jed Pillar in Egyptian cosmology, symbolizing the spine as this conduit between heaven and earth. So your nervous system becomes this. You can think about it like a tree. I like to think about it as a tree, that everything else grows off of this central tree. And just like a tree, it branches out and through the spinal cord into the nerves, into the extremities. We map not just the physical body, but the subtle energy field. And so when we talk about nervous system healing, we're not just talking about stress relief. We are talking about restoring your original sacred pattern, which is the template that you were built upon. And so when you think about it that way, to regulate your nervous system is to return to Divine order and maybe even to touch, you know, the beautiful aspect of the light that's always been present in us, the light that we came through in. And I love the expansion of thinking about the nervous system in this way because it's so easy to really just think of it from its 3D, from its physical body perspective. And when we think about it from this lens of architecture and biology and spirit and really the nervous system also being the interface for how we connect to our environment, all information that we're picking up on is coming to us through our senses, through our nervous system. The subtle cues, the non verbal cues. There's so much more. It always amazes me whenever I sit with a group or I'm leading a circle or a retreat and we sit down for the first time in a circle and we're all meeting for the first time, or there's a class, or you're in a yoga class and you're all gathered and you're sitting in silence. Our nervous systems. I just always imagine these antennas that are coming out from, you know, the energetic bodies and they're all kind of beginning to get to know each other and our tentacles are all shifting and touching one another and we're picking up on information and we're like, oh, what's this person's vibe? What's the vibe of the room right now? There is so much information and the nervous system is picking up on and sending into our body. So let's talk about breath for a moment. Because breath essentially is a conscious portal. When we take oxygen into the lungs, the oxygen enters the bloodstream, it binds with hemoglobin, and then it fuels every single cell of the body. And that's really just the kind of function of it. There's also a subtle function of breath that is recognized across cultures and that is that breath is the carrier of spirit. And so in Hebrew there's a word called rauch, which means, again, I'm sorry if my pronunciation is not entirely exact on some of this, but that word ruash means spirit, breath and wind. In Greek there's the word pneuma. In Sanskrit it's prana, which many of us are familiar with. In Taoism, it's qi that is drawn into the body through conscious breathing. And in modern science we've confirmed that with diaphragmatic breathing. That's a breath that expands the diaphragm. That's where we're sending a conscious breath all the way down into the lower abdomen, into the belly, where the belly expands the diaphragm expands and then that breath kind of moves into the lungs and then into the upper clavicles. And so there's kind of this three part breath. It's a full breath, It's a very slow, engaged, deep breath. And that diaphragmatic breathing stimulates the vagus nerve. It shifts us into the ventral vagal state, which was the safe and relaxed state, lowers cortisol, improves digestion and immune function, enhances our focus and our emotional regulation. And that is literally all just with a deep breath or many deep breaths. And so this is how we can start to use the breath as a bridge between the unconscious and the conscious, because we have the unconscious breathing patterns, which for many of us might be shallow when we're in stressed out states or when we're just working or sitting at a computer, dealing with emails, whatever, the onslaught of things that we go through and deal with every single day, we have unconscious breathing patterns through those moments. And so when we invite conscious breath into that, we are starting to bridge kind of the worlds of the unconscious and the conscious and between the body and the spirit. So the nervous system has energy channels, so chakras, nadis, nerves. In Ayurveda and yoga, the body is said to have 72,000 NADIs, which are these energetic channels that mirror and influence the nerves. And so there's three primary NADIs. The first is Ida, which is this lunar, feminine and cooling energy channel that's on the left side of the body. And there's Pingala, which is solar, masculine and heating, that's on our right side. And then there's Shishumna, which is this central access, the spiritual spine, and that follows the path of the spine, as is mapped by Anadiya Judith's work in the book Eastern Western Mind, which is an incredible book. If you haven't read it, I couldn't recommend it. Enough, enough. So along this Shishumanadi, this, you know, central energy channel that parallels the spine and the spinal cord, there's seven main chakras. And these chakras you can think about as spinning wheels or life force. And in her work, she shows that every chakra is mapped to a nerve plexus, which is kind of major cluster of nerves, an endocrine gland, and a core psychological development theme. And so these are not just esoteric symbols, they're actually very much multidimensional interfaces where consciousness and biology and psychology all converge. And so we'll start with the base of the spine. And even as I'm going through and saying these things, Depending on what you're doing, you can close your eyes and just focus your attention there. The first one is the chakra, the root chakra. And this is at the base of the spine and the perineum. And the glands that this is associated with are the adrenals. And the themes here are survival, safety and trust in life. And this is kind of linked to early attachments, the basic kind of right to exist and grounding and safety in our physical body, having our very basic needs met, like food and safety, shelter, love. In the second chakra, this is the sacral point. And this is in the lower abdomen and the pelvis. The glands here are our ovaries and testes. And there's a nerve plexus here that's called the sacral plexus. And the themes here are sensuality, sensation, pleasure, emotional expression, our emotional relationships, our sexuality. The Judith's insight here are related to the relationship of pleasure, of boundaries and of movement. The third chakra, one of my favorites, the solar plexus, this is in the upper abdomen. You can find it rather by placing two fingers above your belly button. That is where the solar plexus is, the gland here is your pancreas. And the nerve plexus here is called the solar plexus. Plexus, same as the name. And the themes here are around our power, our will, our sense of self, our self esteem, our autonomy in the world. And the insight here is a really around personal identity, healthy ego development, setting goals and boundaries, our willpower, our confidence, all of these important themes in life. And then we have the fourth chakra, which is the heart. This is of course, in the center of our chest. And the gland that's related to this is the thymus. And the cardiac plexus is in the nerve plexus. And of course, we have themes here of love and compassion and understanding and forgiveness and connection. And the insight here is grief and intimacy, the ability to love and receive and give love. Then we have our throat chakra. The location, of course, is the throat. And our glands here are the thyroid and parathyroid. The nerve plexus is the cervical plexus. And our themes here are communication and truth. And I love how truth is here. Truth is linked to this area of the body, of course, and of expression. And the insight here is speaking our truth, of course, creativity, insight, listening, timing, the timing of our communication. It's so easy to have blocks naturally, Actually, really, really love to communicate, whether through writing, especially through writing, also through words and verbal communication. But I had so Much work to do with unblocking my fifth chakra, my throat. And that's been a work in progress as it is for so many women. And there's such depth when you go into your childhood and all of the ways that the little micro moments or the larger moments that influence these various areas of the body. And also recognizing that you go through life and certain things happen and like we could be shut down in one of these energy centers, even just for a day, based on whatever might be happening to us in our world or in our mental world, in our relationships and all those things. So these things don't have to stay stuck for long periods of time. They can, but they can also release just by your thought, just by you. Even right now going through these centers and focusing a little bit of attention there, maybe putting some awareness and intention to actually open these centers up. Okay, I digress. Sixth chakra is the third eye. This is located between the eyebrows. And it's related to our pineal gland, which is of course kind of the all seeing third eye, the nerve plexus here is the carotoid plexus, which is closely linked to the visual and auditory pathways. And the theme here is intuition, insight and inner vision. And then other insights are kind of trusting inner guidance. How big is that trusting? We have the trusting of our voice, the trusting of our expression, and the trusting of our truth in the throat chakra. But in the sixth chakra, in the third eye, we have the trusting of something even deeper, which is the trust of our intuition, the trust of the insight, the trust of the inner vision, the trust of the creativity and the willingness to follow that and the ability to discern. That's another really key theme here is the discernment of what is true intuition, what is my fear, and knowing how to maneuver between those. So the insight relating to the third eye is trusting that inner guidance, pattern recognition and seeing clearly. And then the seventh is the crown chakra. This is at the top of the head. And it's related to the master glands, the pituitary and the hypothalamus located in the brain, the nerve plexus. Here is the cerebral cortex and the upper brain centers. And the themes here are consciousness, unity, spiritual connection. And our insight here is really belonging to the cosmos, feeling connected to everything, everyone, every body in the universe. On our planet, there is this sense of belonging, this transcendence of ego that happens here. The ability to surrender, the ability to be divinely guided. And so I wanted to touch on this because the chakras are a really beautiful pathway of exploration. And it's really where the subtle energy meets our biology. There are actual nerve plexuses that are related to the energetic spiritual body and the physical body. And I love Anadea Judas work so much because she weaves through it in a really beautiful way. And she shows how the yogis described things thousands of years ago and how that mirrors the findings in neurobiology and endocrinology. And her work really confirms what the mystics spoke about before science as we know it today, which is that these centers are not just symbolic, they are. You can think of them as psychosomatic portals where your soul interfaces with your body. Modern neuroscience is also beginning to find the correlates between these nerve plexuses and endocrine function. And it is really just so much more than a metaphor, but really multi dimensional biology and spiritual anatomy. So I want to talk about kind of the masters of vital force, which to me means looking at ancient masters and looking at energy cultivation across cultures. Because the ancient masters, like the yogis, the Taoists, the mystics, the medicine people, they were not sitting cross legged in a cave to escape life. They were training their nervous system to hold more energy, and they were refining their breath and their focus and their inner circuitry to become conduits of life force. And what the Taoists called jing, what the yogis call prana, what the Christian mystics describe as the holy Spirit. These were not passive states, but they were cultivated, stored and direct forms of sovereign power. And so in Taoist alchemy, there's something that was called the microcosmic orbit, and that's a core practice that involves circulating qi. You can think of qi like vital energy, vital life force that moves through the breath. So they would circulate this vital breath up the spine on the inhale and down the spine down the front of the body on the exhale. And they would create this energetic loop, so up the spine on the inhale and down the front of the body on the exhale. And the breath here is slow and intentional, and you can touch the tongue to the roof of the mouth to close the circuit. And awareness is placed at key energy centers. So at the lower dentian, which is kind of like this place right in the solar plexus, right around the belly button area, place your energy there. You place your energy at your heart and at the third eye. So this lower dentian place is right at the lower abdomen. You can find it with kind of three finger width below the navel. I find it helpful as you're getting used to this, to actually put your finger there, to really focus your attention to that part of the body. And this is considered the body's center of gravity and the origin of our vital energy. We're going to talk about Kundalini in a moment. But so much of the breath that we're doing in Kundalini is to build the solar plexus, to build the vital force of the energy here and to breathe from this place. And the visualization and the breath kind of ignite the whole movement of vital force. When you start to do this microcosmic orbit breath, it's really simple. This can take like two minutes, just with your attention, with your awareness, with your breath, a very deep breath. And this practice tones the vagus nerve. It regulates the nervous system. It helps us store energy in this lower kind of area of the body, the battery of our vital force that is just below the navel. I want to shift to Kundalini for a moment, because in this lineage, dormant energy that is at the base of the spine is called kundalini shakti. And it's often symbolized as a coiled serpent. And when it's awakened through breath and mantra and meditation and living in a certain way in movement, it rises through the chakras and it purifies every point, every energy point, every nadi, as it expands in its awareness. And it is truly not a metaphorical rise of energy. If you've ever experienced it. It is very, very physical. It can, like, knock you out. It is actually really important to practice it in a safe way, because there are also kundalini awakenings that have happened where the practitioner, which is the person practicing, has not been ready for that amount of energy to be released through the body. And so you might experience physical sensations, intense physical sensations, expanded perception, spontaneous healing, emotional release. Oh, that's a really big one. Emotional release. As energy is released through some of these points, like the heart or any point along the chakra system, there can be such an immense emotional release, which is really just the clearing of energy. And there can also be a lot of heightened creativity and intuition. And the yogis describe the nervous system as being rewired during this process. I could not agree more. And I think that's part of the reason why kundalini worked, why I love to teach it and why it worked so intensely for me was that it really rewired my whole nervous system. And when that starts to happen as well is that your radiant body increases, your aura expands, your magnetic potential expands, and in terms of the nervous system rewiring. Modern neuroscience also shows that neuroplasticity supports this, because when we're thinking about rewiring our nervous system, neuroplasticity shows us and proves to us that we can change the structure and function of the brain and the nervous system through repeated mental and emotional states. And practices that stimulate this rewiring include visualization. So this is like the mental rehearsal that enhances neural pathways. We have focused breathing, which activates parasympathetic tone via the vagus nerve. We have emotional coherence, which is sustained conscious, positive emotions that regulate the heart and the brain rhythm. And then we have mantra and repetition, which entrains the brain through rhythm and vibration. And of course, there's the famous saying, neurons that fire together wire together. And that means that with conscious intention, we become architects of our nervous system, not just the recipients of our past conditioning, of our literal past, of everything that happened before. We had the awareness that we could change our physiology and become masters of our biology and our mind. And so to me, this is such empowering information that we all have this ability to become self masters and to become the architects of our nervous system. And the way that our reality transforms and the way that our collective transforms when we learn this information. Throughout history, there have been stories across many, many lineages of what happens when this vital force, when this active life force becomes fully awakened and directed. And I want to say that we do not do this for the fulfillment of our own needs. I mean, yes, there is an aspect of that, but when we tap into this, it becomes so much greater than ourselves, and we have so much energy to give and so much energy to share. And so in the yogic texts, there have been very advanced practitioners who've mastered their nervous system, their energy system. They develop siddhis when they do these. And siddhis are essentially extraordinary abilities. And these advanced practitioners are able to heal the sick, bilocate, use telepathy, extend their lifespan, have resistance to extreme heat or extreme cold, and have influence over the elements, so have influence over earth, water, fire and air. And Patanjali, he warns that these are not the goal. So I don't want to say these because we want to be able to have these kind of gifts, but they're natural byproducts of being in deep internal mastery. And so the goal is to feel better, especially when, when we're not in states where we don't feel like there's that much control in how the body is responding to the environment or when we're really addicted to the emotions of the past or living in the past, or really just like embodying the architecture of our early life, early childhood experiences. So there is an element of doing this for healing, for sure. And what I want to emphasize is that there's such a deep connection to our ability to have strength and help others. When we're able to really heal our nervous system, we become so much more available to those around us. We become so much more available to help the world and to be in our true purpose. And so there's also the stories of Taoist immortals. They were sages that were said to live in mountains for decades and cultivate internal elixirs through breath and movement, like qigong and through meditation. And the Taoist immortals, there's legends that speak of bodies that remained warm long after death, of masters who disappeared from physical form, of spontaneous healing through their qi emission, through their life force. And one Taoist concept is external qi healing, where a cultivated master emits energy through their hands or their eyes and rebalances another system through breath, through the cultivation and the conscious movement of life force, of this energy to another being. There's also Christian mystics and saints. So in Christian mysticism, there's, of course, saints whose body emitted a fragrance or actual light, or who healed others with touch and prayer, or who entered ecstatic states that were so deep that they appeared lifeless in those moments. And so this is really pointing to the vital force as our creative and magnetic power. And what that to me, shows and points to is that when we refine our nervous system, we circulate our energy, and we train ourselves to store energy rather than to leak our life force. And that allows us to become what we all want. More magnetic, more creative, more protected, and more attuned, and more connected to source, to God, to the divine, and to feel the divine moving through us and energizing us. And it doesn't have to happen by, you know, living in a cave. That's obviously not realistic for 99% of people. We can simply do this by breathing consciously into the spine. We could visualize light on our inhales and on our exhales by connecting with intention to our breath and by strengthening our energy field. And so we can think about the nervous system as this instrument, the vital force, through breath as the current and consciousness as the conductor. And so we have breath as its 3D function to fuel the physical body. And then we have breath in its vital function, which is the subtle energy that we take in through breath and through air and through every breath we have. And the miracle is that what happens, the result of this coherent energy that is directed by will and that flows through the body is that it can hold a charge. It can hold a magnetic charge. So when the nervous system is in this clear state, where energy is flowing freely and where we're storing energy and releasing energy consciously, our immune system improves. There's spontaneous healing that can happen. The electromagnetic field of the body expands, and we become more resilient, healthier, magnetic, connected. And the mystics referred to this kind of luminous body or the rainbo body in Tibetan Buddhism. And we are essentially radiating more coherence. And we're influencing the field not by force, but by this coherent state. And the heart also radiates several feet beyond the body. And the brain emits measurable electromagnetic frequency as well. And all of this is the foundation of our energetic sovereignty. And I love this so much because this gives us the power to regulate and charge our system. And we become powerful forces in the world, and we become the sustainer and the creator of our own energy and not drained by the energy of the world around us. And so some simple practices to kind of reclaim this power are, like I mentioned, breathing into the spine. Visualize light moving from the base of the root chakra all the way up to the crown number two. You can inhale, you can practice inhaling, like through the hands and the feet, through the extremities, feel breath coming in through the hands and the feet and softening the neck and relaxing the shoulders down, because that connects the cranial nerves and the vagus nerves. And breathing into the solar plexus, right into the fire center, the center of our willpower, charging our willpower and letting your intention rest on your breath. Every inhale as this conscious act of creation. And in this, we become more strong and more powerful and more connected to ourselves and more connected to this energetic sovereignty. And so there's so much more than calming tools. This is so much more than a stress management tool. This is a technology for us being able to have the knowledge of how to restore our original architecture. And so I hope this has been interesting. The nervous system is one of my favorite topics. It's something that I've been studying deeply in my Master of Science right now, and of course, through all of my yogic studies as well, and is really what drew me into Kundalini, specifically is the philosophy and the focus of the nervous system. And when we balance the nervous system, what happens in our life, like all of life, transforms our perception transforms and there's so much power in this. And so your nervous system is your connection truly to the world around you. It is your connection to spirit and it is constantly picking up non verbal information. It is the meeting point, the meeting place of heaven and earth and of light and of matter and spirit and biology. And when you learn to work with it, to breathe into it and to feel it and to direct it, you become more than just regulated. You become radiant and magnetic and life starts to attract things to you and you can become a powerful worker, lightworker or healer. And there's so much more to come here. I am building a space for deeper work in this, but for now I just wanted to start here and with you focusing on your breath and your spine and really owning this aspect and this mastery of yourself. So I'll leave it at that for today. I hope that you took a lot from this episode and I would love to hear about it. Leave a Comment Leave us a Review A five star rating on the show.
