Hello and welcome back to the Rainbow Podcast. I have a huge smile on my face. I don't know if you can hear it in my voice, but today is such an exciting day for us at Rainbow, and it's a solo episode today because I'm going to be sharing some of the behind the scenes story with you, all of our product launch, because today. Is the day that I have been really just thinking about for over four years, and it's the launch of our newest product line called Fungki, F-U-N-G-K-I. Really fun, Fungki little play on words, and I'm so excited. I mean, it's a crazy kind of surreal feeling with mixed emotions, like how has this taken us so long? There's that sentiment of like, oh my goodness, like really? And I'm just like honoring, loving that side of me and the whole experience. And I hope that that resonates with people who are building things that take time and good things do take time sometimes. So excited for this episode today. This is kind of like how I built this style. I wasn't sure how I wanted to initially tell this story, but I think it'll be fun as. Kind of a q and A style, and anytime I do an ask me anything on Instagram, there is always a lot of product based questions, so I'm really excited to share this and hear your feedback and hear what you think about it. So, as many of you know, if you've been listening to the podcast, you know, my journey with coffee has been anything really, but linear. There have been times for years where I've completely stopped drinking it because of how anxious and dysregulated it made me feel. And I am just caffeine sensitive and. Especially with coffee. I will say caffeine, not so much. Teas I'm a lot less sensitive with, but coffee is really abrasive. It is the master plant we love. We love, we worship this plant. It's really quite incredible. And this path and my relationship with caffeine has really led me to finding alternative rituals about different ways to start my day with intention. Ritual has really been at the center of so much of rainbow, truly is like being in right relation with myself and my morning, and the things I'm putting in my body and how I'm showing up in the world. How I'm being and what the things I'm consuming, how that impacts my mood and my energy levels and all of these things. So this has been really an interesting navigational process for me. I have been making herbal concoctions and mushroom elixirs and cacao rituals and just gone on this really deep path to healing and now being able to come back to coffee with a completely different relationship with it, one that feels. Very, very grounded and intentional, and truly supportive, and I think in the process of walking away from something or releasing our need for something or addiction to something, we learn so much about it and we can return to it with such a different level of understanding and we can feel a little bit more empowered. That's been my experience with it anyways. So today I'm gonna be answering some common questions that I get around products in general and applying that to Fungki and kind of telling you guys the story about how this product has come to be. Because truly, whenever somebody launches something, there is such a tremendous amount of work that goes into it, and I really feel you. I see you, anybody that is putting products out, that is, you know, somebody with integrity. It's a big process. And there's so many hurdles and there's been so many challenges along the way. So I wanna share that with you. Give you a little bit of a behind the scenes. So this is kind of the story of the whole process of launching these products, the inspiration behind them, the lessons, the many lessons I've learned along the way. So we will start with something really basic. What is Fungki? So Fungki is our new functional mushroom powdered beverage line. It's a ready to mix powder. They both mix perfectly, like ugh, perfectly. They're water extracted powders, so there's no blending required, and they come two forms. So the first one is Fungki coffee, and that is made with 44 milligrams of caffeine. So it's about a half dose. I've been calling it a microdose, but it's not totally a microdose. If there's enough caffeine that you will have a gentle, sustained, really balanced lift. Again, it so depends on your levels of caffeine sensitivity, but I have found that this specific amount of caffeine in milligrams is a really gentle lift. And so this is coming from a medium body good aroma, kind of like delicious cold brew coffee. And we chose that because it has a lower acid profile, and the coffee is really just like a balanced cup. The taste is fully like coffee. This product is coffee. You're gonna actually taste like you're having a regular cup of your morning brew. It has coffee, it has decaf coffee. It has. Lion's Mane, Rishi Siberian ginseng alu throw to kind of help add some adaptogens to really balance the effects of the coffee and Himalayan sea salt. And that is it. It is incredibly rich and delicious and bold and just not like bold in the sense that it's a cup of dark coffee, but it is just absolutely perfectly balanced in my opinion. That's product number one and Fungki, which is really where this product started since 2016. I've been playing around with alternatives to caffeine. So Fungki is caffeine free. It has zero caffeine whatsoever, and this is a version of a coffee alternative that is meant for all day clarity and anybody who's off caffeine or who's looking to reduce caffeine, who wants to switch out their second or third or sixth cup of coffee for something that is really supportive. So Fungki is roasted caramely, delicious in flavor. It has chicory and mesquite. All of these ingredients are organic and sustainably sourced as well. So for Fungki, this is chicory Mesquite. Lion's Mane, Rishi Cordyceps, vanilla, Salan cinnamon, and Himalayan sea salt. And that is it. We have all of our sourcing on our website as well, so you can find out where all these places, this is our first like international product. These ingredients are sourced from all over the world, which is really exciting. And what a gift. I'm so grateful to the plants and the places that are growing these, and the tenders and the people looking after the land and tending to these beautiful master plants and mushrooms. Just so proud of the beautiful supply chain that we've built around these products. And so what I love and what I've been so intentional about is if you know me, it's like I want real products that work. I'm not here to give you a small dose of mushrooms. I want mushrooms. I want doses that are impactful, that you're gonna feel the difference. I'm so proud and excited to say that these two mushroom coffee, the mushroom coffee, and the mushroom coffee alternative are the highest dose of mushrooms on the market. Both products per dose are giving a 3000 milligram dose of functional mushrooms, and that's really big. Those are clinical doses, very real research backed. There's no fillers, there's no gums, there's no sweeteners, there's no mycelium, all fruiting body mushrooms, and just very clean ingredients for all day brain support and energy support. I wanna loop back around for a moment on this concept of coffee being a master plant, because it really is, and I have such reverence for it because it's so domineering in its energy and we love that. I mean, I love that. But coffee, of course, is so woven into our rituals and our culture. And just like any master plan, it needs a lot of balance. The coffee energy is upward and activating, and for many of us can be overwhelming on the nervous system. And that's where mushrooms and adaptogens come in and they're like. Helping to ground that stimulating upward energy, and they're really like mushrooms or coffees, B, F, F. So the mushrooms that we have in this, like lion's mane and Rishi and Cordyceps, are gonna anchor and nourish the system, helping to buffer the crash, helping to remineralize, helping to regulate the stress response. Because coffee does stimulate the stress response in our adrenaline. So coffee is helping to buffer those, I guess, constitutions of coffee, like what coffee does in the body. Mushrooms are coming in to really support and provide long-term brain health and nervous system, and. Provide that layer of protection. And so in my mind, it's like, of course coffee should be paired with these plants and with these mushrooms, because when you pair them intentionally, the mushrooms are helping you to harness the coffee, the power of coffee without burning out. And I was in full burnout. I remember one time and I was like, I was nuts. I would drink, I would get so hopped up on coffee that I wasn't even eating. I remember one time like full crash. I was immobile on the couch at 3:00 PM. And I was like, oh no, I forgot to eat again. Like Uhoh, here I am again. And in this loop of that and just like really, really depleted from it. So it was really in 2016 when I started to combine these mushrooms and herbs into my coffee elixir. Okay. Question number two, where did the idea for Fungki come from? that's where it started. It was around 2016 when I realized that I had a very tumultuous relationship with coffee. It was coffee specifically. I felt addicted to it and I kept wanting to stop and every morning there I was drinking it on an empty stomach and really not. Supporting my body in the way I knew I needed. And I really loved the ritual. I loved the taste, I loved the energy, but I was really just getting to the end of the road of being able to sustain it. And I really didn't like how it made me feel really. I was anxious, I was wired, I was exhausted. so it took me a while to actually get off. And if you want to hear the story in more depth, I do suggest going back a couple episodes to the Caffeine as a Drug podcast episode. It is really insightful episode about caffeine and about the history of coffee, which I won't get into all that now, but I do suggest going and listening to that. So basically this whole experience of this on and off, again, relationship with coffee. Eventually pushed me even deeper into my relationship with mushrooms, because, when I first tried them, I think, potentially part of the reason they worked so effectively was that I was in a depleted state and my nervous system responded so incredibly well to Rishi. So once I started really taking mushrooms on a daily basis, I started to blend my own drink and I was reading studies, I was in school, I was creating my own rituals, and by 2018 I had I think it was 16 or 20 ingredient mushroom elixir that I made. And it had coffee in it. and I made that every morning. And it had lion's mane and Rishi and Chaga and cacao, and ghee, and sometimes even coconut butter. Cinnamon. I don't even remember all the ingredients, but I can pull it up if anybody. Wants it. And I shared this recipe with clients. I had clients at the time with friends, with family, with anybody who would come over. And, people really loved it. And that really stuck with me. And it's kind of what has evolved into Fungki, Fungki is not 14, 16 ingredients, but it is a paired down version of that. Okay. Question number three. Why did this take four years to launch? That is, the question of the day. bringing this product to life has really. Felt like a long game in some ways, especially because I have refused to compromise on quality. And I don't know if it's my to nature or the levels of perfectionism that I can sometimes, go through. But it's just been a long process. everything has a moment in time that ripens and. This is ours, I suppose. I was just chatting with Simon this morning , I was going through my email and I was like, okay, how long have I really been working on Fungki? the first formula for the caffeine-free Fungki I created in 2020. And that first formula is nearly identical. I think our mushroom concentration is higher now, but the, the recipe I had envisioned then is what is now. Coming out. And that's really cool to me. And it didn't have a name at that point, Fungki as a name came to me, in our branding exercise in 2021 with my B fff, Sarah, who I have a podcast episode with as well. Anyways, so I'm having this conversation with Simon this morning and I was just kind of like a bit down on myself. I was like, what the F have I been doing for four? why, just that negative self-talk moment of like, oh my goodness, why did this take so long? And I know, I know why it took so long and I'm gonna tell you why it took so long. But I mean, the formula has, not been tweaked too much, although it's been passed through several hands at this point. And I worked with an herbalist to really refine the active doses and, get to this final version. and it's also gone through multiple manufacturing partners. We were ghosted by a manufacturing partner after months, like years rather of development. They lied to. I mean, that's a whole other story. our manufacturer actually hid fillers and sugar derivatives in the samples that they were sending me. And my gut told me that the sweetness in it was not real. I was like, I'm sorry, this flavor is not coming from roasted, dandelion and chicory. And burdock, it's just not, and I could tell by the mouthfeel and I kept pressing them on it and they straight up lied to me and tried to cover it and I was like, , I don't think I've ever been more upset in a business scenario like, you do not fuck around with our products. Like that is just so beyond what is okay from my perspective, especially when it was made very, very clear the levels of quality and integrity and simplicity. There's no ingredients, there's no fillers. There's nothing that can be added to this product. So I was livid. And you know, they basically said, whoops, like our food scientists. Effed up. and that was not okay. So these kinds of things are gonna obviously slow you down. being a brand owner is an immense responsibility, and I take this stuff so seriously as every single person should. and you've gotta really advocate for. Your requirements and find partners who are aligned with your standards and, the potent formulation and that are going to follow the instructions And then I don't wanna say that was one experience and it was a really shitty one, that I learned a lot from. And it's like you've gotta have tons of checks and balances in place to make sure that there's accountability in place and these kinds of things. But you need to have brand owners that are gonna be really intense about that stuff because there's definitely stuff that can get hidden in products. and that's really scary, right? and my body just knows that I really trust the intelligence and the intuition, and the gut feelings of my body because I feel like, formulating on me is like. it's not gonna get past me, because I can tell, somebody with a sensitive digestive track is gonna know, what's in that product and if there's something that is not whole food plant-based. anyways, rest assured please that this process has taken so long for a reason, and that's because, we moved our manufacturing to Canada in that process. And now we're working with the most incredible pharmaceutical, manufacturing partner. They produce pharmaceuticals, their level of quality and standards and compliance is just above and beyond, what is required for natural health products. And so We are in such good hands, so we had to start this process over three or four times. I guess I'm telling you this process because, well, I believe in transparency and I think it's insightful and other brand owners understand that these kinds of things, you come up against hurdles that you just cannot possibly anticipate. And that stuff just delays you. I'm also not somebody who's really racing at anything in life, I'm very much like. divine timing. And we even worked with an al astrologer, which if anybody is interested in working with one, I have a great recommendation for somebody he works with, founders of all kinds to. Select the chart for a launch. And I love that because, there's moments in time where you don't wanna launch something like eclipses or apparently even new moons are not that great to launch things on. But anyways, I have a process, right? everybody has their process Of how long things take. And I can be a bit, slow in that process sometimes, but I am in trust that there's a reason for that path. so these are some of the reasons. we've been navigating packaging delays, shelf life testing, compliance, all of these things. And really finding the right partners. I would say that that has been the biggest, Peace to this whole, bringing Fungki to life. I would say this has been, one of the most humbling experiences of my career, and also the most rewarding. And because we didn't rush it, and we waited, we have something that we can now stand behind 100% and it has the original recipe and the heart of the 2018 20 ingredient elixir. just in a format that's now really easy and delicious and that can get into hundreds and thousands of millions of hands, which is just so exciting to bring. my prayer for this is to really bring high dose effective fruiting body. Organic, just the best quality mushrooms into people's lives because I know that that can transform bodies and minds and spirits, and I know that that sounds like whatever it sounds like, but I believe, and I know that that's possible and that mushrooms can help ground us and anchor us and nourish us during these chaotic times. Okay. Question four, what is something someone should know before launching a consumer? Goods product. Okay. So I get this question a lot. And it's not easy obviously to answer, on a one story slide. , It's in depth, right? Launching a consumer good product , there's so many ways you can do first and foremost, I would say is understand. the financial, which way you're gonna do it from a financial perspective, it can be expensive. and it really depends on where you're at in the brand life cycle and in the stage. So it can be expensive. , That's my first thing that you should know is that between. R and d and manufacturing and packaging and inventory and marketing and just getting the whole thing up and running. And minimum order quantities that some manufacturers will have. There is a capital intensive nature to this, and so it's not always a low lift side hustle. And the NHPD, health Canada, the FDA, they're also not making this process any easier going into the future. Right? So there is an investment, there is, a responsibility that you should go into this it really depends on the scale too. Like you can do this at the farmer's market, which is a beautiful place to start, kind of where I started, but slightly different too. I had a lot of farmer's market experience with some other products. But, with Rainbow, I think the other side of this is that I did it in a really, really scrappy way. And so if you need that expansive story too, I don't know if that exists anywhere on the podcast. I can't remember. But, I was really scrappy with it and used my own investment and was really able to sell the vision and find the right partner from the get go who would let me place a small order. So, There is a middle path in between this, but know which way you wanna go in it and what your resources are and what you need to do to make things happen. Number two, that your partners, whew. That's important one, especially when you're gonna be doing things with integrity. I don't know how else to say that. I guess I think everybody should be aiming to do it that way. of course that's not necessarily the case, but, when you're looking for a manufacturing partner, get references, ask for references, visit the facility, make sure the values align. we have Like a values and standards. SOP, you can devise one of those even if you're beginning, you can have one of those in place. Like, hello, this is how we do business. This is what we expect of our partners. This is the level of X, y, and Z. put one of those together and. Make sure your values align with the values of the people you're working with. That energy goes into your products. That is felt, that is important. Number three, stick to your standards. Everyone's gonna have opinions. There are gonna be people who think they have better opinions than yours and more experience than you. And this is simply not the case. they may have more experience granted, yes. Okay. But you have a product vision and if you're a product person and you have a vision for that, really stick to what you believe on that there's gonna be. All of these opportunities to lower your costs or lower your functional active dose or ingredients, or add sweeteners or add fillers and cut costs here and there. Do not do that. Build the product you believe in and stick with that. Love your product. Number four, if you wouldn't. Drink this or consume this every day, don't sell it. You've gotta be really obsessed with it, and that's what carries us through the inevitable delays and the setbacks and all the learnings. So really love, love, love what you're creating. And now next question number five is how do I drink Fungki? How do other people drink? Fun So in the morning it really depends because I'm not currently drinking again. This changes, like currently I'm not drinking coffee every day. So because I now have like. You know, a solid supply of Fungki coffee. I'm drinking it a little bit more regularly, like a couple times a week. but my ritual right now is a Fungki, a that's caffeine free and, I really go through bouts with it. So I'm gonna be doing a 30 day caffeine free challenge, either this September or October. Stay tuned if you wanna join us in that. And feel free to DM me, or comment on this episode. That kind of helps me gauge interest levels as well, so you'll hear more about it when we're launching it. My go-to is, Fungki. I drink that every single day. Now that I have a consistent supply of it, I drink it every single day. Every single person who's come into our house and tried this, either Fungki coffee or Fungki, is like messaging Simon and I being like, I need this every single day. So that's just the best, the best kind of review, honest review I could ask for, and hope for. So that's my ritual with it. when I am drinking Fungki coffee in the morning, I'm kind of mixing it with ghee or MCT oil, cinnamon, any of my herbs, ashwagandha, any of that stuff I might have laying around. so you can do a big concoction with it. Also you can just drink it straight up right in the cup. I love that you don't need to blend it with anything. It's not clumping, like some of the other products on the market. It just dissolves perfectly. that means something to, something that's so exciting actually is that we have single serving sachets coming in a 10 pack box and that just is such a dream come true on planes. I don't know about any of you guys, but caffeine in airports and on planes is. Such a thing. You're either bringing your own stuff with you, bringing your own tea bags or whatever. but I am envisioning this product on airplanes, because it's so great to travel with and the single serving sachets are gonna make it really easy to do that. so the way Simon drinks it, he's kind of like really trying to cut back. He's a two to three coffee a day drinker. And so he has now cut back to, sometimes he'll have Fungki in the morning and then one in the afternoon. So he's almost Decreased his dose by, two thirds, I think that would be by a lot. other times he'll have, Fungki in the afternoon as instead of his second or third coffee. So he's really been using Fungki coffee to reduce his caffeine intake. And I do foresee a lot of people using it that way, because I just know so many people are trying to limit their intake of caffeine. Now question number six. What do mushrooms have to do with focus and energy? Okay, great question. Like I was mentioning about coffee being a master plant, very dominant yang energy. mushrooms and adaptogens come in with a yin energy, with a balancing and nourishing a rooting energy. Lion's mane contains and oracene. These are compounds that stimulate. Nerve growth factor, and they support neuroplasticity, brain regeneration. they're supporting degenerative brain conditions like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. there's so many studies that have come out now with improved cognitive function in older adults. I have, a research paper I wrote on Lions Man that I will link in the show notes. That is, really incredible, Lions man is just such a, such an incredible. Brain nourishing mushroom cord eps, which is in Fungki only. and that's to really provide an energy boost in our caffeine free option. And so that supports a TP production, cord EPS fuels. The cells with energy at the basic cellular level, it improves oxygen use and endurance. Athletes love to use this. There's a famous, 2004 study that shows that CORTIS can increase VO O2 max, reduce fatigue. Cortis is also so nourishing to the adrenals. It is adrenal food. And then we have Rishi. Which modulates, I mean, queen Rishi, we all know how I feel about her. modulates, the HPA access regulates the stress response helps to lower cortisol supports immune function, the liver hormones, sleep, calm, focus. Ugh. I've never had a relationship with a plant like I have with Rishi she is my master, teacher plant, and, is in both versions of Fungki and Fungki coffee, so. Those are our mushrooms. and they're gonna help to sustain and regulate the nervous system with aligned energy when we caffeinate, when we choose how to use our energy. And a reminder that coffee does not give us energy. It masks the fatigue signals. In the brain. This was mind blowing to me when I learned. I was like, what? I don't get energy from coffee. It's actually masking fatigue and it's borrowed energy that I have to repay. Oh, yeah. So that's been really interesting. And the other really interesting thing with caffeine sensitivity for me has been that it really impacts my sleep. I couldn't dream of really having a. a coffee after 12:00 PM just because I know I'd be up late into the evening. And so if you're somebody who has any sleep issues as well, you can try, using Fungki coffee for that purpose too in the morning and really seeing how your deep sleep levels, shift. Okay. Question seven, what's the biggest lesson throughout this process? Oh my goodness. Um, biggest lesson is that nothing good. Can or should be rushed. Every delay has really taught me something so valuable, every obstacle. And I say me like, I just wanna shout out to the most incredible team, who is working so hard behind the scenes. We have been putting so much into this product. and every single obstacle, has sharpened. My conviction, I would say that feels very true for me. Every obstacle has sharpened my conviction and my clarity. Every moment of wanting to quit or just questioning it, in those moments which is a bit of a, contradiction to the previous statement, but let's acknowledge that life is so nuanced, right? We can have both. Both can be true. Both sides can be true because they are. so it has both sharpened my conviction in the need for this product. And of course we have our moments of being tired or whatever. And once that haspassed. It has really brought me back to the same truth is that this is truly worth it and I believe in this so wholeheartedly. Also alignment over urgency. Always, always, always. And when I try to be urgent, I get out of alignment. And so I just know this to be true for my projector self is that alignment is so important for the way we work. in the new age of the new earth energy that we are trying to ground, in this process. So, you know, I could have launched a mushroom coffee product years ago, probably yes. but it wouldn't have had the story or the level of soul or the potency or the intention that it has today. And so for that, I'm very, very proud and excited. Question number eight, how do I hope people feel when they drink? Fungki. And what is the role of ritual? Okay. I mean, I hope you feel presence and nourishment and clarity. I hope your body feels truly, truly supported. I hope, and I wish that the mushrooms bring you into a sense of embodiment and. This is really about creating a ritual, one that is intentional and alive, and that excites you and that gets you feeling alive and funky and fun and playful. amidst whatever's going on in life. And so this is not, simply about replacing coffee or demonizing it or anything of that nature. it's really about upleveling ourselves and changing our habits and bringing more self-awareness to our practices. And so. Ritual really brings meaning to the mundane for me. In that way it, it signals to the nervous system that you're safe. It signals that this is an action I'm taking with intention and with awareness. Research shows that ritual reduces stress, it increases focus, it helps us feel grounded in uncertainty. And so Fungki is really rootedin ritual, in helping to, get us on an aligned path to ritual. So I hope you create that when you consume these delicious products. Okay. Couple rapid fire questions before we wrap up. So. Does Fungki or Fungki coffee taste like mushrooms? No, not even a little bit. It tastes so Smoothie. It tastes so smooth and earthy. Andthe Fungki coffee is bold and delicious, as I mentioned, and really balanced. No mushroom funk here. And then Fungki is like caramel and naturally sweet and vanilla and just this absolute. Gorgeous craveable drink. Okay. 3000 milligrams of mushrooms. Is that too much? Why is it 3000 milligrams? So, first of all, 3000 milligrams is a therapeutic level that is going to create real change in the body. It is a clinical dose. It is not too high. It is designed to create real impact, and deliver real benefits. For your body, for your nervous system, for your immune system. I believe that these products are medicine. next rapid fire question, which is not rapid at all. ' cause I give long answers, but, coming back to my process, being slow. Can I drink this every day? Yes. And that's how you will get the benefits. Mushrooms work best with consistency, so yes, I recommend drinking this every day. Can I drink Fungki coffee and regular coffee? You totally can drink Fungki coffee and regular coffee. So, Fungki coffee has 44 milligrams of caffeine, so you can stack it, or use it to kind of have a gentler base layer. So what I mean by that is you can have a Fungki coffee as your one morning drink, and that's that. Or you can. Have it any way you want. You can have a regular coffee in the morning and have Fungki coffee in the afternoon, or have it as your second cup. or if you're trying to wean off of coffee and quit altogether or even just experiment, try a month caffeine free. Try a month on a lower dose of caffeine. See how you feel. Reconnect to your own vital source of energy. Sure, it might be hard, but hard things are important to do and it's important for us to realize and understand thatWe can connect to a vital source of energy that is so innate and within us, and that does not rely on external substances. And that's a really powerful, place to get. And my zoom out with the big insight is that this Taught me that building something with integrity takes time. And Fungki has really taught me a lot about discipline and about patience, and about pivoting and about how to work with partners and how to find aligned partners. And it has been a real deep experience of. trusting in alignment and trusting in divine timing, and trusting in the ripening of the moment that something is meant to come to be. Because if it is meant to be, it will be. And so in Guy Raz style of how I built this. This is how I turned my nervous system dysregulation into my mushroom obsession and into a kitchen elixir, a 16 ingredient kitchen elixir, and now into this product line.
